Menstruation Foods And Healthy Diet Plan

Weight reduction measures have brought irregularities in my menstrual cycle? What to do? What precautions and what type of diet should I take?

Undertaking severe dieting measures to reduce weight can lead to irregular menstruation cycle. Irregular menstruation cycle, which is medically known as oligomenorrhea, can be caused by several things as well – pregnancy, hormonal change, poor diet, etc. Severe eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia can also make menstrual cycle irregular.

Diet And Menstruation

It seems the weight reduction measures you have been taking have made you malnourished. To get back to your normal menstrual cycle it is necessary that you take up a proper diet plan. You should include foods in your diet that contain protein, essential fatty acids, vitamins, and mineral. It is mostly found that a deficiency of proteins, fats, and essential amino acids cause irregularity in menstruation. If you had been into some strict weight loss diet, it is quite possible that your body has developed one of those deficiencies. If there are no underlying ailments causing this irregularity in menstrual cycle, chances are that you’ll get over this with a proper nutritious diet plan.

Eat plenty of green vegetables and fruits, whole grains, nuts, legumes, pulses, etc. Consume fish as it is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids and can help provide you with good nutrition. Dairy products, lean meat, poultry, eggs should also be introduced in the diet. Your diet should also have foods rich in vitamin B6, vitamin E, magnesium, and potassium, as they also play an important part in bringing back regular menstrual routine. Vitamin B6 can be sourced from whole grains, nuts, vegetables and meat. For vitamin E you should eat nuts, seeds, cucumber, olive, leafy green vegetables, vegetable oil, etc. Magnesium is also available in food items like nuts, cereals, and, green vegetables. Common sources of potassium are banana, tomato, potato, broccoli, brown rice, and meat. All these food items are easily available and can be included in your diet plan. Occasionally, you can also prepare a soup of chicken and/or vegetables with a dash of ginger or black pepper. Cereals and pulses can also be added into the soup and make it more wholesome. This soup, besides being quite palatable and relaxing, can also provide significant amount of nutrition. Regular intake of fresh fruit juice is also advisable.

Besides following the diet practices, it is also important that you avoid alcohol and smoking. Spicy foods, caffeinated drinks, refined and processed foods are better avoided as well. Salt and sugar intake should also be cut down. Care should also be taken to not put too much stress on the body. All strenuous physical activities should be stopped.
