Pizza Recipes and Delicious Turkey Spinach Calzones

Spinach Pizza Ingredients:

½ pound turkey breast, cooked
¾ cup Italian blend cheese, shredded
1¼ cups spinach
1 packet pizza dough, refrigerated
¼ cup pizza sauce
Cow’s milk
Parmesan cheese (optional)

Method:

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degree Fahrenheit.
  2. Take a large bowl to combine turkey with spinach, pizza sauce and pizza cheese.
  3. Lightly flour a flat surface and with the help of a rolling pin lightly roll out the pizza dough (1/2 packet) into an 8 inch square. Cut this into 4 equal 4 inch squares. On half of each square place the turkey mixture and spread evenly within ½ inch of the edge. Apply little water to the edges of the dough to moisten the edges. Fold the edges to get a triangular or a rectangular shape. With the help of a fork press the edges to seal them. Brush the calzones with milk and prick its tops with a fork. Repeat the same process with the remaining pizza dough and turkey mixture.
  4. Place the calzones on a baking dish and sprinkle them with grated parmesan cheese (optional). Bake till golden brown or for about 17 to 18 minutes. After done transfer those on a wire rack to cool.
  5. Place calzones on an ungreased baking sheet, cover them loosely. Freeze them until firm. After they are firm you may transfer them to an air-tight freezer containers or re-sealable freezer bags and freeze them up to three months. Remember to seal and label these bags or containers properly.
  6. Serving: One day before serving, make sure to remove the calzones and thaw them in the refrigerator. Preheat the oven to 350 degree Fahrenheit and lightly grease a baking dish. Unzip the calzones and place them on the greased baking dish and bake them uncovered for up to 15 minutes. As the calzones are heated through serve them hot with warm pizza sauce. This recipe serves 4.

Health tip:

  • You may replace turkey with skinless chicken breasts. The turkey you choose to cook should be lean and preferably without the skin.
  • Use whole wheat flour pizza dough instead of refined or white flour pizza dough.
  • This recipe provides 300 calories and 8 gm total fat per serving. To decrease the total fat of the recipe you may eliminate the cheese.
  • Turkey-spinach calzones can be considered a high protein recipe as provides around 27 gm protein per serving.
