Home Remedies for Treating Infertility

Infertility is a wide ranging term that is used to describe the inability of two partners to have a child for the period of a year when not using safe sex methods. For ease of discussion, infertility issues that are related to a lack of arousal and libido have to be kept separate. If the scope of infertility is limited to purely the biological aspects, it can be caused in a man due a low sperm count, unviable sperm, and even erectile dysfunction. The quality of sperm is something that cannot be controlled because of the mechanisms of sperm production. It is very well understood that the process of spermatogenesis or creation of sperm is dependent on nutrition levels and hormones like dihydrotestosterone or DHT that are responsible for maturation of sperm. It is also important to understand that excessive sexual activity may actually reduce male fertility. The average sperm requires 70 days before it reaches a stage of maturity and the release of sperm before that is just an injection of immature sperm. Smoking and alcoholism are leading causes of infertility in men because of hypoxia and diminished functions.

In women, the factors are even more complicated because of the added complexities of the menstrual cycle, reproductive organ integrity, and quality of eggs. Age is also a major factor in the quality of the eggs a woman has. The consensus is that after the age of 35, a woman’s eggs will slowly start to cease to be viable. Other problems that can cause infertility in both men and women are sexually transmitted diseases. This is probably more damaging for women than men because it is not just fertility that is affected. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and other venereal diseases can cause Pelvic Inflammatory Disease and destruction of the epididymis in men causing infertility. Women have to face the additional prospect of endometriosis which can also have no specific reasons for occurring that renders them infertile.

Dealing with infertility therefore requires dealing with the underlying causes. From a dietary perspective, there is little that can be prescribed to increase the virility and viability of a person as these are factors that are controlled by hormones. However a healthy balanced diet will go a long way in ensuring proper hormonal levels. One factor that is advised is to indulge in quality sexual intercourse instead of concentrating on quantity. Other factors include understanding when you are ovulating and also understanding the limitations of having a child after the age of 35.
