Toothache Home Remedies

If you have a toothache, then you probably have a cavity or some kind of dental infection. It is advisable to rush to a dentist as soon as possible instead of bearing the pain. A toothache also means that you have a dental problem that needs to be treated before it becomes worse. But while you are waiting to visit the dentist, you will need some tips to keep the pain under check. Here are some toothache home remedies that you can try out.

You can use an icepack. It numbs the tooth/gum and decreases the pain. Get an ice cube and hold it to the affected area for some time to decrease the pain. Ice can suppress the nerve endings. Use peppermint to get relief. Add about five grams of it to a cup of water and put it to boil. Add half-a-spoon of salt. Drink this lukewarm liquid for relief from the pain. You can even use thick chunks of cucumber. Just hold these to your tooth for a soothing effect. It is best to use chilled pieces of cucumber.

If your toothache is happening because of an abscess in the gums, then you might get some toothache pain relief by holding some oats to the area. It is believed that pats can draw out the puss and can reduce the pain. Use peppermint oil or stack peppermint leaves to get relief. Pack them around the aching tooth and spit it out after 15 minutes. Repeat this remedy several times a day to get relief. You can use authentic vanilla extracts on a ball of cotton and apply it on the inflamed area to get relief. Clove, with its analgesic properties, is considered to be a great remedy for toothaches.  Use clove oil over the inflamed area or on the aching tooth.

You can use asafoetida too. Add some to lemon juice and make a paste. Apply some warm paste on the aching tooth. You can rub a drop of iodine to the aching tooth for pain relief. Try oil of oregano. Though it will give you a burning sensation and will taste bad, the antibiotic properties of the leaves can soothe an aching tooth. Grind some garlic into a fine paste and mix rock salt. Apply this paste to the affected tooth.

Prevention: Prevention is always better than cure. To prevent toothaches and formation of cavities, rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after every meal and every time you eat something. Use a medicinal mouthwash before you go to bed. This helps to flush out the food particles in the mouth. Brush your teeth twice a day. You must also visit the dentist for regular checkups and get the tartar cleaned every few months.
