In India, home remedies have been used to treat health problems for several hundred years. Age old recipes are prepared with available ingredients to prepare remedies to treat coughs and colds, wounds, pimples, stomach ailments and a lot of other problems. Women have used ingredients such as the leaves of medicinal trees, pepper, sandalwood, chick pea flour, and other regular kitchen ingredients to make face packs, herbal teas, body scrubs, and medicines. Here are a few Indian home remedies to get you started.

Home Remedies for Cold and cough

To treat coughs and colds, you can try several home remedies. You can boil a cup of water in a saucepan and add a few leaves of Holy Basil, crushed ginger, peppercorn, and a spoon of honey. Let this mixture brew and simmer for a while and then strain some of the liquid and drink it while it’s warm. Save the concoction for later and drink the liquid every few hours to get relief from colds and sore throats. You can also boil a glass of milk and add turmeric and pepper to it. Drink this before going to bed to get relief from a sore throat. You can add salt to warm water and use to for gargling to clear a cough or soothe a sore throat. You can prepare nose drops to clear the nasal passage by mixing 1/4th teaspoon of salt in 120 ml of water. Boil this solution and then let it cool. Put two to three drops of the solution in each of your nostrils.

Home Remedies for Diarrhea or an upset stomach: If you suffer from an upset stomach, and have been losing a lot of fluids from your body, then you can make a jug full of lemonade by mixing water, sugar, lemon juice, and a bit of salt. Drink a glass of this every now and then. It helps to provide energy and replenish lost fluids and salts.

Indian Home Remedies for Constipation: You can make a mixture of warm water, lemon juice, and a bit of honey and drink this first thing in the morning. Drink the mixture every morning as soon as you wake up for better results. You can also mix Psyllium husk in yogurt and eat this to get relief from constipation. You should also drink a cup of warm milk before you go to bed every night.

Skin: Raw turmeric is supposed to be very good for the skin. Buy some from a grocery store and make a paste with water. Apply this golden yellow paste all over your body and wash it off after sometime.
