Home Remedies for Treating Urine Infection

Causes of Urine Infection: Urine infections are a common occurrence that mostly occurs because of a lack of hygiene. Women are usually quite susceptible to this problem because of improper hygiene while defecating that introduces bacteria near the urinary opening and also because of their urethra being much shorter than males. This makes the progression from introduction of the bacteria to a full blown infection all the more likely. Women who swim regularly are susceptible to this infection because of the higher risk of contact with contaminated water. When the urinary bladder is infected, it results in a condition called cystitis. This is not a dangerous disease at all, unless it is left untreated. If it is left untreated, a reflux of urine could cause the urine infection to spread to the kidneys. This is a medical emergency and is called pyelonephritis.  It is also important to note that vigorous sexual activity with a new partner can also cause a urinary tract infection and doctors regularly recommend urinating after sexual intercourse to ensure that infection does not occur.

In a typical scenario, bacteria are always a danger to men and women alike in the urogenital area; however, this rarely progresses into becoming a major infection because the very act of urination itself flushes out bacteria that might otherwise find their way into the urethra. Additionally, there is a layer of protein that coats the urinary tract that prevents bacteria from adhering to the walls of the bladder and the urethra. When an infection does occur, the bacteria attack the cell walls of the urinary bladder. In response, an inflammation occurs and white blood cells are sent to the area to deal with the infection. White blood cells like neutrophils are usually the first to reach the site of a urinary tract infection and travel through blood and tissue to reach the site of infection.

Treating a urine infection of the urinary tract requires the use of fluroquinolones like ciprofloxacin, administered for a week. A home remedy and prophylactic is drinking cranberry juice that contains the anti-adhesion factor mentioned earlier. As an antibiotic, the use of garlic is advised and this should be had in significant quantities while the infection is underway. The application of diluted tea tree oil near the opening of the urinary bladder is also advised but can be quite uncomfortable to use if the area is highly inflamed. Drinking ginger tea will help modulate the level of inflammation.
