Influenza which is also commonly known as the flu is mostly caused by a viral infection in the upper respiratory tract. Influenza is known to affect the nose, throat, middle ear, lungs and bronchial tubes.

For those who also suffer from a sore throat during the flu, gargling with salt and warm water is also known to help provide relief from an itchy throat. A home remedy for congestion and overall aches during the flu involves inhaling the steam emitted from hot water in which two teaspoons of fresh ginger or eucalyptus oil have been added. This treatment is known to unclog the bronchial tubes and ease congestion thereby making breathing easy. In case of a throbbing headache, the person may also apply a warm moist compress against the sinuses and cheeks. For stuffy nose, one may also use saline nasal sprays that are easily available. Stuffy nose during flu can also be cured at home by eating spicy foods and also garlic which is known to have immune stimulating and antimicrobial properties. For those blowing their nose throughout the day, application of some petroleum jelly to minimize the irritation of the nose which may have become swollen and red is known to be helpful.
