Treating Tonsillitis With Home Cures And Natural Treatments

Tonsils are located at the back of the throat, on either side. These are supposed to combat infections and prevent us from getting sick. While tonsils do their job well, sometimes bacteria and viruses get to the tonsils and this causes inflammation and tonsillitis. Anyone can get tonsillitis. While this condition is common in children, it generally does not affect kids who are younger than two years of age.

What is tonsillitis? This is a condition in which the tonsils become inflamed, and this may happen because of germs or an infection. The symptoms of tonsillitis includes swelling, white spots on the surface of the tonsils and a dark red tinge. Pain in swallowing, severe sore throat, nasal congestion, runny nose, headache, tender and enlarged lymph nodes in the neck and jaw, and fever or chills.

Tonsillitis spreads from one person to another. It is spread through airborne droplets, kissing or hand contact. If the pain is unbearable or you are feeling terrible, then it is advisable to speak with a doctor and get medicines for relief. However, if you would rather use some home remedies for relief, then try the following suggestions.

  • Boil water and add a handful of fenugreek seeds to the water. Use the decoction, after cooling it a bit, for gargling.
  • You can also gargle with saline water for relief.
  • Brew yourself a pot of herbal tea with ginger, peppercorns, leaves of Holy Basil and honey. Drink this hit tea every few hours for relief.
  • Another beverage that can bring some relief is a cup of hot milk with ginger, turmeric and pepper. Drink this before you go to bed for relief.
  • You might also like to drink raw vegetable juices i.e. juices of cucumber, beet and carrot.
  • It is also advisable to drink a lot of liquids. Clear soups, hot broths, herbal teas and water are some of the things that you might like to drink at regular intervals if you have tonsillitis.
  • Avoid eating spicy foods or acidic beverages as these might irritate the inflamed tonsils. You might also like to avoid fried food products as the oil can cause irritation to your throat.
  • Rest a lot and give rest to your throat too.
  • You might also like to sip a vitamin-rich beverage during this time. Mix some lemon juice and honey in warm water and sip this when you have tonsillitis.
  • Include a lot of fruits in your diet. You might also like to toss fresh salads and eat low-oil stir-fries or boiled dishes cooked with leafy and crisp veggies.
