Tennis elbow is also called lateral epicondylitis and occurs due to inflammation in the tendons in the elbow that connect the muscles of the forearm to the arm. This condition is not restricted to only tennis players and is believed to occur due to tears in the tendons of the elbow joint. Repetitive wrist movements such as those used during tennis or other activities may result in tennis elbow. This condition causes pain and discomfort on the outer area of the elbow. The pain becomes aggravated during activities that require grasping or wrist motions. Discomfort is also experienced when lifting things and the pain can radiate through the forearm. Symptoms of tennis elbow usually begin gradually but in some cases the onset may also be sudden.

Tennis elbow is generally seen in individuals between the ages of 35 to 65 years. In most cases, this condition develops in the dominant arm. The people most likely to develop tennis elbow are manual laborers who work mostly with their hands and sports persons such as those involved in racquet sports, golf, fencing and other sports activities.

The cause of tennis elbow is not known for certain and is thought to be more than just inflammation of the tendons in the elbow. Aging or repetitive movements involving the tendons are thought to cause a gradual degeneration. A decreased blood supply to the area is likely to hamper proper healing due to lack of oxygen and adequate nutrition in the area. This is what sets in motion the process of degeneration which then leads to the development of tiny tears in the tendons. If you are experiencing swelling around the elbow, problems when flexing the arm, pain in the elbow that starts at night or when the arm is resting or if the pain continues for many days, then it is advisable to undergo a medical examination to determine tennis elbow.

When affected by tennis elbow, it is important to give the arm adequate rest in order to reduce the pain and soreness. This will also prevent additional injury from occurring. Applying ice compresses to the elbow for fifteen minutes will help to reduce swelling and inflammation. Using ice and heat packs alternately will also help to ease the pain. Applying a heat pack using hot baked potatoes is also known to be effective in alleviating the inflammation. Compressing the area with a bandage is also effective in reducing pain and discomfort. In order to decrease the swelling, try and keep the elbow elevated to a level higher than the heart as much as possible.
