Home Remedies for Swollen Tonsils

Swollen tonsils are an indication of respiratory infection that has been caught at this immune system outpost called the tonsils. The tonsils are a slightly difficult to understand organ because it can be removed from the body and the person would sometimes be no worse off because of it; however, because it is part of the lymphatic system, it is of immense significance in maintaining the integrity of the immune system. When a part of the lymphatic system swells up, it is called a lymphedema. This is something that should be kept in control because losing the tonsils is not a good option for the future; however, it is sometimes surgically removed when it impedes breathing.

The lymphatic system is a massive filtration and screening system in the body. It can be visualized as a parallel system to the vascular system. When the blood vessels narrow out at certain parts of the body tissues into capillaries, the force and pressure of blood being squeezed into a smaller space squeezes out the smaller molecules of material out of the blood vessels by hydrostatic pressure. This clear fluid that pools in the tissues is called interstitial fluid. This drains into a lymphatic vessel where the fluid becomes lymph. This lymph is moved around the body by muscular movements until it reaches a lymph node like the tonsils. It is screened by the macrophages and T-cells of the body here for pathogens and, if all is clear, it is sent back to where it can from and the lymph is reabsorbed into the blood via osmosis. When there is a pathogen detected the lymph node will swell up as it inflames to fight the infection.

Considering the amount of damage runaway infection and inflammation can do, one should have anti-inflammatory additions in the diet when facing swollen tonsils. This should also be combined with antibiotics to aid the body in killing pathogens. The first step is to create a soup that should be consumed thrice a day. This soup should consist of ground black pepper, chili, garlic, ginger, turmeric and tomato puree for taste. The taste of pepper and chili should overpower the rest of the ingredients. This will have a nearly immediate effect of quelling inflammation in any part of the body. The garlic in this concoction will also serve as an antibiotic in the system. Warm, salt water gargles are also advised as elevated temperatures kill most bacteria.
