Sore Throat Treatment With Home Remedies

A sore throat is a condition that occurs quite frequently and can result due to various causes. It could be caused by a viral infection in which viruses such as those which cause mono-nuceleosis and influenza affect the throat. A sore throat can also commonly develop when breathing takes place through the mouth. This can dry out the throat and causes soreness and tenderness. When affected by the common cold or sinusitis, individuals also tend to experience a sore throat. This is because in these conditions post nasal drip occurs where the mucus discharge drips down the throat and causes irritation.

Bacterial infections may also cause a sore throat. The bacteria known as streptococcus and arcanobacterium haemolyticum usually infect the throat and cause soreness. This is a condition that is common in young adults and is also accompanied by a rash. Certain antibiotic treatment, chemotherapy and other medications that may lower immunity are also known to cause a sore throat. A persisting sore throat which continues beyond two weeks can be a cause for concern as it may be indicative of an underlying illness which in some cases may even be cancer of the throat.

There are several natural remedies that help to alleviate the discomfort caused by a sore throat. A solution of warm lemon juice and honey will work very well in treating sore throats caused by viral infections. An excellent remedy that will relieve a sore throat in a short period of time is to gargle with a solution of salt and water. Take a liter of water and add two tablespoons of salt to it.

Warm the water slightly and then gargle with it for ten minutes. Do this at regular intervals during the day and you will find that the soreness is slowly diminishing. Another easy to do home remedy is to add one teaspoon of cumin seeds to water and bring to a boil. Then add a couple of garlic cloves and simmer for a while. After it is cooled, drink this slowly. This will help greatly in decreasing itching and irritation caused by a sore throat.

Teas are very beneficial when taken during a sore throat. Drink hot herbal teas for quick relief from soreness and discomfort in the throat. Another beneficial concoction is made by adding black pepper, cinnamon powder and honey to warm water. Sip this slowly to alleviate symptoms of a sore throat. Drinking plenty of orange juice and water and consuming lots of fruits and vegetables helps to build immunity and will thus be effective in fighting a sore throat.
