An allergy is a condition in which the natural immune system of the body reacts adversely to certain substances that ordinarily do not trigger such a reaction in most people. One of the most common agents that cause allergies is pollen that is carried about freely by the air during spring and fall. The most common symptoms of pollen allergy are sudden bouts of coughing and sneezing, headache, itching in the eyes and nose, excessive watering and redness of the eyes and a runny nose. Patients of asthma may also suffer from breathlessness as a result of pollen allergies.

The reason behind these symptoms is that the fine mucus membrane of the nasal passage gets inflamed on coming into contact with pollen and secretes a chemical called histamine, which causes profuse watering of the eyes and nose. Heredity is believed to a factor that predisposes a person to such allergies. Also, a person is more likely to suffer from such allergies if his/her natural immunity is already compromised due to some physical ailment. It has also been observed that those who are allergic to dust, dander and mold tend to suffer from pollen allergy too.

Precautions For Treating Pollen Allergies

There are a few basic precautions that you should follow to prevent an attack of pollen allergy. So far as it is practicable, avoid stepping out of doors when the amount of pollen in the air is at its highest, such as early in the morning and when it is windy. You should also use nasal masks that are specially designed to filter out particulate matter from the air you breathe in if you must go out. Using air conditioners and window screens to filer out pollen from your immediate environment is also useful. It is also popularly believed that using generous amounts of spices like garlic, horseradish and cayenne pepper helps prevent pollen allergies by acting as natural decongestants.

Drinking a cup of green tea twice every day is also known to reduce the chances of allergic reactions by supplying antioxidants to the body that help boost the immune system. You may also steep a teaspoon of fenugreek, aniseed, fennel or sage seeds in the herbal tea to make it more effective in preventing pollen allergies. Eating fresh citrus fruits also produces a similar effect. For another remedy, add a few drops of castor oil to a glass of water or fruit juice and drink it early in the morning. This prevents allergic reactions in the nasal passage.
