Treat The Pink Eyes With Care - Eye Discharge Treatments And Cures

The conjunctiva is the fine transparent membrane that covers the outer portion of our eyes. When this thin layer gets inflamed, it leads to a condition known as conjunctivitis or pink eye. This condition can be caused due to a viral or a bacterial infection, allergic reaction, or eye strain. Pink eye causes severe itching, irritation and reddening of the eyes. At times there may also be a thick creamy discharge from the patient’s eyes. Although, pink eye is not a serious condition, it can cause a substantial amount of discomfort.

Following a few simple home remedies however, can help in treating this rather uncomfortable condition. First and foremost avoid rubbing the eyes, as this will only worsen the condition. Splashing the eyes with cold water two to three times a day will prove to be helpful, as it will have a soothing effect on the eyes, thus reducing irritation. Take a medium sized potato and chop it into thin slices. Place a slice on each eye for about 10 minutes. Thereafter, splash the eyes with chilled water. The potato slices act as an astringent which will help in getting rid of the inflammation. This remedy should be performed twice a day, till one begins to notice visible results. A solution made by mixing together two cups of water with a teaspoon of baking soda, serves as an effective eyewash.

Tips For Treating Pink Eyes

Wash the eyes with this mixture twice a day; it will help in soothing as well as relaxing the eyes. Soak two clean pieces of cloth in a bowl of aloe vera juice. Squeeze out the excess juice and then place them on each eye. This treatment, if performed twice a day, will help in reducing inflammation and irritation. A decoction prepared by boiling a teaspoon of fennel seeds in two cups of water, can also be used as a soothing eye wash.

The patient will also need to increase their intake of Vitamin B2 and Vitamin A. Foods such as butter, yoghurt, papayas, mangoes, tomatoes, green leafed vegetables, pumpkins and carrots are rich in vitamin A, while bananas, citrus fruits, almonds and milk contain high levels of vitamin B2. Sugary and starchy foods such as refined cereals, white bread, jams, puddings, potatoes and confectionery should be excluded from the individual’s diet.

Furthermore, strong tea or coffee, sauces, condiments, and fatty food are also to be avoided. Abstain from indulging in activities that will strain the eyes such as reading and watching television.
