Tips For Treating Brown Spots

The most common cause of brown spots on the skin is exposure to the sun. In addition to causing brown spots, the ultra violet radiation of the sun is responsible for many other types of damage to the skin including the premature appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, sagging of the skin, premature ageing, and puffiness caused by the swelling of the blood capillaries in the region of the face.

Other factors such as cigarette smoke, pollution, stress, and a poor diet may also be involved in the development of brown spots on the skin. Genetic factors, hormonal imbalances, pregnancy, menopause, diseases of the liver, intake of birth control pills, acne, and reactions to harsh chemicals may also contribute to this condition. There are also certain skin diseases and medications that may trigger the formation of dark spots.

Brown spots are also known as age spots, liver spots or sun spots. They occur due to an excessive production of the pigment melanin which is responsible for giving the skin its color. An increase in the level of melanin production is triggered by prolonged exposure to the sun. Brown spots are also referred to as hyperpigmentation. There are several home remedies that help in the treatment of brown spots.

A mixture of onion juice and apple cider vinegar is known to reduce dark spots with regular application on the affected areas. Lemon juice is also known to be effective in getting rid of brown spots due to its acidic nature as it has a bleaching effect on the skin. Another beneficial natural remedy for brown spots is aloe vera.

The gel or juice extracted from aloe vera leaves helps in alleviating many skin problems, including dark spots. The application of the gel or juice on the affected areas twice daily will produce positive results in a month’s time. One can also apply castor oil to the affected areas of the skin. This will cause the dark spots to fade within a few months.

The herb, horseradish has been known to be effective in treating brown spots. A beneficial natural remedy for age spots may be prepared by mixing horseradish and vinegar. Take a four inch piece of horseradish and grate it. Add the grated horseradish to ¼ cup of vinegar and set it aside for a couple of weeks. Remember to shake the mixture regularly. Then strain and store the liquid in a container. This may be applied to brown spots thrice a day for quick results. The remaining mixture may be stored in the refrigerator. Ensure that you test this remedy first on a small area of skin to rule out the possibility of an allergic reaction.
