Discoloration of Teeth

Teeth discoloration can result due to several factors. Smoking or chewing of tobacco is likely to result in brown discoloration of the teeth. Eating or drinking certain foods such as apples or potatoes, coffee and tea can cause yellowing of the teeth. Wines and colas are also known to discolor the teeth. Improper dental hygiene allows for the build-up of plaque which lends a dull appearance to the teeth. There are also certain diseases that are associated with teeth discoloration as they affect the enamel and dentin of the teeth. The enamel constitutes the outer hard surface of the tooth and the dentin is the inner layer beneath the enamel. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause the tooth to become discolored. Certain types of infections which occur especially in pregnant women can result in teeth discoloration in the baby. Intake of certain antibiotics has been found to cause discoloration of teeth in children with developing teeth. Antihistamine medication and drugs for hypertension have also been known to discolor the teeth. Materials used in dental procedures such as those containing silver sulfide can give a grayish tinge to the teeth. Genetics also plays a role in determining the brightness and thickness of the tooth enamel. Excessive use of fluoride containing products such as toothpaste or supplements can even cause tooth discoloration. Individuals who suffer enamel damage due to trauma or injury can also experience discoloration of the teeth.

Natural Tooth Whitening: To whiten discolored teeth, apply a paste of baking soda, salt and lime juice. Clean the teeth with this daily to get rid of discoloration. Fruits such as oranges, lemons and strawberries are known to have a bleaching effect on the teeth. Increase consumption of such fruits in the diet. To remove stains and prevent plaque build-up, brush your teeth twice a day. Rinsing the mouth with a mouthwash after meals also helps to prevent staining of the teeth. Avoid drinks such as colas and other carbonated beverages as these leave marks on the teeth. You can also rub the teeth with salt to reduce discoloration.

Teeth Whitening Home Remedy: In order to prevent further discoloration of the teeth, discontinue habits such as smoking or tobacco chewing. Restrict the intake of coffee and tea as well. Avoid eating sugary foods before going to bed as they allow for growth of bacteria which can cause tooth infection and discoloration. Chewing sugarless gum after eating is known to prevent tooth discoloration as it encourages the formation of saliva which helps to wash away the substances that cause darkening.
