Home Remedies for Snoring

Most people tend to snore occasionally. However, when it occurs excessively, it can affect the quality of sleep as well as cause disturbances to others. When the particles in the air vibrate, sound waves are formed, and this results in snoring. During sleep, the tissues of the nose begin to vibrate due to the flow of air. This results in the sounds that occur when a person snores.

Causes for Snoring:

Air passes in and out of the nose, mouth and lungs in a steady flow when we breathe. When we are awake, breathing takes place quietly and as such not many sounds are heard. During physical activity or exercise the air begins to flow in and out quickly and this increases the turbulence of the flow of air. This results in a slight vibration of the tissues in the mouth and nose. During sleep, the back of the throat narrows and the air passing through this constricted space causes vibration of the surrounding tissues. This produces the sounds of snoring.  Allergies and blocked nasal passages are also responsible for snoring. In some individuals, the tongue may be resting against the throat during sleep, thereby resulting in an obstruction of air. Even if the jaws rest in an improper position, the passage of air could become constricted and cause increased vibration of the nose and throat tissues. People also generally tend to snore when sleeping on their backs. Weight gain can also contribute to snoring as the fat deposits in the neck can exert pressure on the airways. Those who take antihistamines or sleep medication are also likely to snore. Alcohol consumption and smoking can also be responsible for an individual’s snoring.

Treatment for Snoring: If you tend to snore while sleeping on your back, then changing your position will solve the problem. You can also try to sleep without a pillow or if you cannot, try using a contoured one. This is found to reduce the sounds made while breathing during sleep.  Avoid taking sleep medications or other sedatives as these relax the muscles and aggravate the snoring. Difficulties in sleeping could be associated with your snoring. You can consult an ear, nose and throat doctor for this. Avoid consuming alcohol before sleeps as this can worsen snoring. Being overweight is also likely to increase the likelihood of snoring. Switch to a healthier diet and exercise regimen. Allow proper circulation of air within the room by keeping windows open. This will ensure that you nasal passages remain moist and free or irritation.
