Missing Menstrual Cycle And Irregular Menstrual Bleeding

Irregular Periods And Amenorrhea Treatment

I am 22 years old. I did not have my menstrual cycle since 5 years. What may be the reason? What is the solution?

The condition that you are suffering from is known as amenorrhea, the complete absence of menstrual periods in a woman who is of reproductive age. From adolescence till menopause, a woman is considered to be of reproductive age, and at the age of 22 you certainly fall within this category.

There are two types of amenorrhea – primary and secondary. Primary amenorrhea is when menstruation does not start at all, even though a woman has reached reproductive age (typically, if menstruation has not started by the age of 16, a girl is considered as having primary amenorrhea). Secondary amenorrhea is when menstruation starts at the normal age, but subsequently at some point of time it stops. Since you say that it has been five years since you have had a menstrual cycle, I assume that you were menstruation normally before this, and your problem is secondary amenorrhea. Five years is an extremely long time for menstruation to have stopped. Have you consulted any doctor during this period of time? If you have, then one would need to look into their findings and any treatment that they may have prescribed before recommending a new solution.

Missed Periods And Shortened Menstruation Cycle

However, it seems that you have not had any medical examination, diagnosis, or treatment for your problem. You should remedy this as soon as possible – amenorrhea is a complex problem, and cannot really be diagnosed or treated over the Internet. Causes of amenorrhea include premature menopause (which itself is really a symptom and has its own causes), pituitary gland disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCO-S), and thyroid disorders. You will need to undergo a physical examination, and possibly a few tests as well in order to find out the underlying cause. The doctor will also need to thoroughly look into your medical history to determine whether any known medical conditions could have caused the cessation of menstruation, either directly or indirectly. Certain medications could also cause menstruation to stop, so if you have been undergoing treatment for some medical problem over the last five years, this could be the cause.

Treating the amenorrhea will of course require treatment of the underlying condition that is causing it. In a few cases, no treatment is necessary, as long as there are no other symptoms or risks and the patient does not plan to have children. In other cases however, the condition that is causing amenorrhea could be quite serious and requires prompt medical attention.
