Treating Swollen Tongue With Home Cures

In order to find the home remedies for a swollen tongue which work best, it is important to know why the tongue is swollen in the first place. There can be many reasons for this. The tongue can swell up due to something as mundane as a food that did not agree with you. It can also swell up due to dehydration. Another reason for the tongue swelling up is that you may have bitten it and therefore injured it badly. For some people, allergic reactions can also lead to this problem. So in order to get at a suitable remedy for the tongue swelling up, it is important to first figure out why this has happened.

If this is because of an allergic reaction, it is possible that you may need medication to get rid of the swelling. If this symptom has lasted for a few days and there seems to be no respite in sight, you are strongly advised to go to a doctor and figure out a way to control the symptoms with medication. It is not a good idea to leave it be or try home remedies if you are troubled with this for long, as remember that a swollen tongue can also lead to breathing trouble eventually.

Apart from this, check the amount of water you are drinking. If this seems sufficient to you, then try and check the amount of salt you are taking in. sometimes, a high salt intake can also lead to dehydration. Salt would tend to retain water in the body and especially in the skin tissue of the extremities. If you are eating large quantities of salt, try to cut back. In any case, a high sodium diet also has some other and far worse consequences than merely giving you a swollen tongue.

If this is a swelling caused due to injury, your best bet is to try and work the swelling down using simple methods such as icing down the swelling. Simply keeping ice cubes in your mouth would be enough to help with this. You can also add a pinch of salt to the ice cube in order to help with bringing the swelling down. Swishing a solution of salt water to which a pinch of turmeric powder has been added is also useful in bringing down the swelling. Please keep in mind that these remedies should be tried for no more than a few days. If there are no results, please consult a doctor for a detailed check up.
