Purine Diet And Stingray Fish

Stingray or skate fish does not possess a high purine value but falls into the category of medium – purine foods as do many other fish meats. Sardines however are extremely high in purines. Skate meat however does contain a number of nutrients and is also a good source of polyunsaturated fatty acids like omega 3 and omega 6.

Since you haven’t mentioned any other concerns other than purine level I assume that you are familiar with someone who is afflicted with gout or you suffer from the condition. Low purine diets are also suggested for individuals afflicted with uric acid stones. Keep in mind that solely obsessing over the purine content of food will not help much. Purines in your diet do have some effect on uric acid levels, but there are many other factors as well that influence uric acid levels.

If you do wish to follow a low purine diet there are several recommendations that you should consider. The major dietary sources of purine that you should either avoid or consume infrequently include: heart, kidney, liver, sweetbreads, meat extracts (bovril, oxo), fish roes, herring, mackerel, sardines, anchovies, crab, shrimps, peas, spinach, whitebait, beans, lentils, and strawberries.

Most other meats, poultry and fish, excluding the above mentioned exceptions, contain only amounts of purines that are moderate and these products can be consumed but in moderation. Most of the other fruits and vegetables do not contain significant amounts of purine and they can be consumed without any restrictions whatsoever. A moderate intake of purine is not connected to a gout risk.

Some of the foods that are extremely low in purines include cheese, yogurt, cucumber, pear, chicory, radishes, lettuce, onions, bread, apples and potatoes to name a few.
Changing the foods that you eat and drink can be challenging at first but taking it one step at time will help. Change your diet gradually and you will be able to overcome the initial difficulty of abstaining from certain foods or consuming others.

Focus on these changes more as lifestyle changes rather than dietary changes.

  • Choose a wide variety of foods to include in your diet and try out new methods of preparation. This will help minimize or eliminate the possible frustration at having to eat the same foods day after day.
  • Keep a list of purine foods in your kitchen so that you always are aware of the foods you can consume and those you should avoid. If you live with your family and they are supportive familiarizing them with your diet requirements and restrictions will help a lot.
