Plugged ears are often temporary and quite harmless. They occur as a consequence of allergies or infections like a cold or flu. Generally, once the infection or allergy subsides, the ears tend to clear up or unplug immediately. The Eustachian tube of the ear becomes blocked, leading to pain, hearing loss and a feel of plugged ears. If you are experiencing severe hearing loss and if you symptoms have lasted for a long time, then you should seek medical help immediately. The medical interventions that are normally carried out are basically cleaning and flushing techniques. The wax accumulation or other accumulations in the ear are flushed out, thereby unplugging the ears. You can try a simple exercise that involves systematic breathing in and out. Breathe in and hold your breath for a few seconds. Then, keeping your nostrils and mouth closed, try to blow out the air you are holding. This may help unplug your ears.  Plugged ears generally don’t last too long and can be easily treated with a number of decongestant medications. These include decongestants that are taken orally, sprays that are topical antihistamines and sometimes steroids, depending upon the seriousness of your condition.

In addition to allergies and infections, blocked or plugged ears can also be caused by pressure inside your ear on account of accumulated fluid. Fluid accumulation in the ear can result from a number of factors, primarily, the accumulation of water in the ear. Ensure that you clean your ears thoroughly after swimming or a shower and ensure that they are completely dry to avoid the possibility of plugged ears. Be careful while cleaning your ear so as to not injure your eardrum. Use only soft buds to clean only the outer portion of your ear. In case of any problems with blocked wax, entrust the job of cleansing your ear to your medical practitioner. Do not use cotton swabs or q-tips to cleanse the inner portion of your ear as these will only aggravate the condition. Chewing gum also helps relieve symptoms of plugged ears. The chewing motion helps relieve the pressure inside the ear and helps reduce pain. Yawning, like chewing gum, also helps relieve pressure inside the ear and helps reduce pain and discomfort. Generally, medication prescribed for allergies and cold helps relieve pressure in the ear by draining the fluid that accumulates inside. A few drops of hydrogen peroxide will help unclog your ears effectively. Apply a few drops of hydrogen peroxide in your ears and it will clear up any congestion immediately. Pure grain alcohol is also similarly effective.
