What causes pink eyes? Pink eyes can be caused by many factors.

It could be due to conjunctivitis. This is a contagious disease, caused by bacteria, leading to severe soreness and irritation. The tissues of the eye get inflamed, and the eye produces larger amounts of white discharge, which give it a gummy feeling.

Pink eyes could be caused by too much stress on the nerves of the eyes, leading to redness in the eyeballs and rims of the eyes.

Pink eyes could also be caused due to allergy or irritation by a number of things starting from mascara to foreign objects like dust, or even by too much exposure to harsh sunlight.

Home Remedies For Treating Pink Eyes And Blurred Vision

Home remedies for pink eyes: The first goal should be to clean the eyes, reduce the inflammation and soothe the eyes.

First of all, maintain strict hygiene to avoid passing on the infection to others. Wash your hands with soap and use anti-bacterial wipes to clean anything like door knobs or computer keyboard and mouse, which are of common use.

Keep the eyes clean by repeatedly removing the excess whitish discharge which tends to accumulate in the corners of the eyes.

Lime juice and water is a good remedy. Wash your hands and face thoroughly with soap. Cut a lime into half, squeeze the juice in half a cup of water and wash your eyes with this. You may also apply some lime juice to the eyelid and lash line. This may sting a bit, but it is quite effective.

Honey has anti-bacterial properties and can be used in the same way. Dip a cotton bud into honey and apply to the eyes.

Mix equal quantities of honey and soy milk. Put a couple of drops in your eyes before retiring for the night.

Salt water is also an effective remedy. Mix about 2 to 3 tablespoons of table salt in a cup of water, boil and cool. Lie down facing upwards, and place a cotton bud which has been soaked in this saline solution, on your eyes, the salt water will gradually soak in, cleaning and disinfecting the eyes.

Boil some water with a few pinches of coffee. Cool and apply this solution to your eyes with a dropper. Leave it for about 15 minutes. Your eyes may feel dry after some time. Wash it off with cold water.

While these remedies may sting, used tea bags can be very soothing, especially black tea. Place used tea bags on your eyes for about 10 minutes.

Diet: Drinking hot green tea or spearmint tea, laced with crushed ginger often helps to reduce inflamed eyes.
