Your recovery from jaundice will largely depend on the type of jaundice and its severity. But adequate rest and a good diet should help in any case along with the ongoing medications.

Drink a lot of fluid as this will increase your urine output and thus help to flush off the toxic wastes, especially bilirubin from the body. However make sure that all the juices are freshly extracted and prepared at home preferably, to ensure optimum hygiene levels, as the resistance to infection is low in jaundice. Any kind of infected beverage or food can make the matters worst.
  • As the severity of the condition passes and your bilirubin levels lower, a soft easily digestible, bland diet can be started. Simple foods like rice with yoghurt, porridges, grovels and other vegetables and fruits can be taken. However, make sure that your diet is very low in fat; hydrogenated fats, oils, butter, cream or margarine should be avoided. Easily digestible fats like cream and butter can be added in the diet gradually after 2 weeks, but in small amounts. Till then to make your meals more palatable you can include fats from eggs and skimmed milk in your diet.
  • Foods which have a tendency to putrefy or ferment in the body should be avoided these foods include pulses, legumes, sprouts and other fermented products containing yeast. This will help to avoid any kind of digestive disturbances.
  • Avoid alcohol completely for at least 3-4 months or even longer until the liver cells are fully recovered.
  • Take plenty of rest and avoid any kind of stress. Before starting or discontinuing any medications consult your health care professional.
