Diabetes Diet Information and Uric Acid Reducing Diet

Diabetes Diet Guidelines and Diet for Uric Acid

There are many foods options that are available to you as most of the foods restricted for uric acid are also restricted for diabetics. Try the following dietary tips which will help you choose a variety of foods that you can eat.

Tips for Controlling Diabetes with Diet

  • If you are overweight try to lose some weight to maintain an ideal body weight. Even a slight decrease in weight can significantly improve your uric acid levels and control your blood sugar in a healthy range. But as you mentioned feeling weak, I assume that you might not be very overweight. However, if you are, then it would be wise to visit a dietician so that you can lose the extra weight safely.
  • Drink plenty of water as this will help to increase your urine output and thus flush out excess toxins and uric acid from your body. However avoid fluids like sweetened fruit or vegetable juices, sugar cane juice or other sweetened fluids. You can have unsweetened vegetable juice instead. You can have coconut water in moderation, but if you have an option between coconut water and a plate of fruit choose whole fruit, preferably with its skin.
  • You can eat most fresh fruits and vegetables, except the ones restricted in diabetes and uric acid that would include mango, custard apple, sapota, banana, root vegetables and spinach, asparagus, cauliflower respectively. These foods can be eaten in restricted amounts and other fruits and vegetables can be eaten as much as you like. Fruits and vegetables are low in fat and provide many other vital nutrients so you can eat them to your heart’s content.
  • The basis of your diet should be whole cereals, grains and its products. Avoid refined cereals, refined flours and other processed cereals as they provide very few vital nutrients.
  • You need to restrict the foods that are high in purines as they tend to increase your uric acid levels in the body. Foods high in purines include all meats, poultry, herring, mackerel, lentils, spinach, green peas, cauliflower and mushrooms. Fish low in purines like salmon can be included in your diet twice a week as it not only has anti-inflammatory properties that will help to decrease gout pain but also has omega-3 fatty acids which will help to maintain your blood glucose levels.
  • Exercise or increase your physical activity. If you are not able to perform strenuous activities go for a daily brisk walk. A daily walk for 30-35 minutes can help to maintain your blood sugar levels and also decrease your uric acid levels in the body which will in turn decrease your gout symptoms.
