Type 1 Diabetes Dietary Plan

Type 1diabetes, also referred to as insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, is a type of diabetes mellitus. It is an autoimmune disorder, which results in the destruction of the beta cells. The beta cells are produced by the islets of Langerhans of the pancreas. Autoimmune disorder refers to self destruction, wherein the body's own cells are considered as foreign bodies and are attacked. It is a life threatening condition that requires exogenous administration of insulin.

Insulin replacement therapy, involving the use of insulin injection or pump is used as a mode of treatment, in addition to proper diet.

A healthy and balanced diet with adequate water is effect6ive. Complex carbohydrates, in the form of fruits, vegetables, legumes, pulses and whole grains are recommended. Healthy fats such as monounsaturated fats are helpful. Trans fats and saturated fatty acids are avoided. Vanaspathi, butter and clarified butter are some of the saturated fats.

Animal foods are restricted as they are a rich source of saturated fats, and most of them are invisible. Intake of sweets is restricted. Alcoholic beverages contain 'empty calories', and contribute to no nutrients. A pancreatic transplant is the only available cure for type 1 diabetes. Insulin therapy is not needed after this treatment.
