Advice on Diabetes Mellitus
Diabetes mellitus is a disorder associated with insufficient secretion of insulin or due to improper functioning of the hormone. The blood sugar is regulated and this is achieved by drugs, diet and exercise. Carbohydrates play a vital role, especially those of low glycemic index. Calorie restriction is used for controlling the weight of diabetics. Skipping meals is not recommended. The craving for sweets is substituted by the intake of fruits. Honey, sugar, candies, chocolates and sweets are avoided. Starchy vegetables, such as tubers are not included in the diet. Mangoes, bananas, jackfruit, Sapodillas and grapes are avoided. Alcoholic beverages are abstained from. Tomatoes, colocasia, radish, green leaves and cucumber are the vegetables which are used in excessive amounts. Foods to be restricted are salad oils, pastries, cakes, pakoras, deep fried foods, dry fruits, poories and other foods are avoided. Alcoholic beverages are completely abstained from. At least 40 gram of fibre is recommended. Increase the number of meals to four or five, instead of three. Bakery foods are avoided, as they are rich in saturated fats. Fresh fruits and vegetables with legumes, pulses and whole grains are recommended. Saturated fats are avoided and poly unsaturated fats are allowed. Proteins, such as eggs, milk, fish and so on are also included.
