Best Diabetes Diet
Management of diabetes requires a strict dietary regimen with regular exercise and drugs or insulin injections based on the type of diabetes. Though the nutritional requirement for a diabetic is the same as an individual devoid of diabetes, calories are restricted based on the weight of the individual. About sixty per cent of the calories are derived from carbohydrates.
The carbohydrates are distributed based on the activity and needs of the individual. One third of them are provided during dinner and lunch, the major meals. Twenty five per cent of the remaining carbohydrate is seen in the breakfast with 9 per cent for the evening snack. About 15 to 20 per cent of calories are from proteins. The kind of protein sources that are included are poultry devoid of skin, lean meat, milk and related products, nuts, legumes and pulses.
Skimmed milk is a good alternative for milk. Fats help in providing 15 to 25 per cent of calories required every day. Saturated fats are restricted to the maximum extent possible, along with Trans fats. Poly and monounsaturated fats are useful. About 25 grams of dietary fibre is recommended for every 1000 calorie intake.
