American Diabetes Association
The American Diabetes Association recommends the basic guidelines for a diabetic individual. Less than 30 per cent of the calories are obtained from fats. Poly and mono unsaturated fats are more preferred, rather than saturated fats. Protein from lean sources is preferred. Poultry devoid of skin, lean meat and fish provides the necessary proteins.
Two three ounce of serving of protein is allowed on a daily basis.
Protein provides 10 to 20 per cent of the daily calories. Complex carbohydrates contribute to about 60 per cent of the daily requirement of calories. High fibre foods are preferred, rather than starch. Moderate intake of concentrated carbohydrates is helpful, namely honey, juice, soda, fructose syrup and table sugar. Dried beans, lentils and legumes are also a good source of complex carbohydrates, which provide essential vitamins, energy and minerals.
Refer to your nutritionist for an individual diet plan. Such plans help in enhancing overall health of the individual, by improving the blood lipids blood glucose and so on. Juvenile diabetics require special planning of diets. Achievement of normal sugar levels, limiting foods that cause heart problems and ideal weight maintenance is the ultimate of a diabetic diet. Skimmed milk and related products are taken. Organ meats, egg yolk and liver are avoided.
