Healthy Diabetes Diet
The nutrient requirement of a diabetic is the same as an ordinary individual. Dietary control with exercise is important. A well balanced diet helps to a great extent in keeping a check on the sugar levels. Exercise is vital in controlling diabetes. Appetising and satisfying diets are made of artificial sweeteners. Control of blood sugar is the primary mode of treatment for the disorder.
American diabetes diet allows sugar intake in moderation. Ensuring apt glucose levels is vital, as sugar and other foods are converted to glucose. Weight loss decreases the requirement for insulin. The amount of fats is equally reduced in the blood by shedding the extra pounds. Natural insulin secretion is enhanced by losing extra weight. The chances of blood pressure are also decreased. Diabetics are at increased risk of atherosclerosis than normal individuals.
A diabetic diet should be low in refined sugars, calories, fats, sodium and cholesterol. Calories are restricted to reduce the risk of cardiac diseases. Fats, especially saturated fats are avoided. Sodium restriction helps in diabetics with hypertension. The diet should be rich of complex carbohydrates and fibre. These are fruits, vegetables, legumes and whole grains. Low carbohydrate foods with low glycaemic index are recommended.
