Is drinking alcohol bad for diabetes? Is drinking alcohol bad for diabetes? There is no straightforward answer to this question as studies have shown that if you drink alcohol in moderation, you do not have to avoid it completely, if diabetic. Keep in mind that the body processes alcohol the same way it processes fat and alcohol provides just as many calories. If you are therefore diabetic and choose to drink alcohol, do so occasionally and when your blood sugar and diabetes are under control. What then is the safest alcohol for diabetics? Once again, the jury is out on this question. Perhaps the safest alcohol is the one that is had with diet soda or seltzer water. Remember that sweet wines and liqueurs have high sugar content. The same goes for mixed drinks as they are invariably mixed with sodas or sugary fruit juices. If you are diabetic and wish to continue drinking limit your intake to maintain a stable glucose level. One drink for women and two for men is the recommended intake for diabetics.
Sugar alcohol for diabetics refers to a type of reduced calorie sweetener. These sugar alcohols for diabetics provide about half the calories of sugar and other carbohydrates. They do not contain any alcohol.
