Diet Plan for Diabetic People

Diet for an individual with diabetes requires proper planning. A variety of foods are provided, though skipping meals, especially breakfast is not allowed. Ready to eat junk foods are avoided. Processed foods and fried foods are not recommended. Proper education regarding the time of insulin injection and meals is essential. Biochemical parameters including protein and iron levels are constantly checked to see any deficiency.

Fruits and vegetables provide complex carbohydrates, though tubers are not allowed. Fruits such as mangoes, Sapodillas, pineapple, and jackfruit and so on are not recommended. Sweet beverages and alcoholic beverages that contribute to empty calories are avoided in the diet. About 1500 to 1800 calories are permitted based on the body mass index of the diabetic. In case of overweight, it is reduced. Carbohydrates contribute to 60 per cent of calories, whereas protein and fats contribute to twenty per cent each.

Saturated fats are avoided. Healthy fats, such as omega 3 fatty acids are allowed. Bakery products are abstained from. Four to five meals are preferred. At least 40 grams of fibre is helpful in keeping the sugar low. Other existing complications such as hypertension, renal problems, atherosclerosis and so on are taken into consideration.
