Healthy Eating During Pregnancy

What is the importance of healthy eating when pregnant?
(July 27, 2010)

The importance of healthy eating cannot be stressed upon enough, especially during pregnancy. This is because pregnancy is one of the most rewarding times in a woman’s life. However, it is also a time that is fraught with many changes that occur within a relatively short period of time. Within a span of just nine months, your body goes through innumerable changes to prepare for the birth of the child that is growing within your womb. Due to this, the nutritional requirements of your body increase and change drastically.

Pregnancy and Healthy Eating: Not only do you have to provide your body with sufficient nutrition so that it can perform the necessary alterations that it needs in order to support the life growing in your womb, but you also have to take into account the fact that part of what you eat and drink is being transmitted to your unborn child.

Thus, it would not be wrong to say that your nutritional requirements are almost tripled when you are pregnant.
If these nutritional requirements are not met, it can lead to many serious complications such as:
  • Pre-term labor
  • Low birth weight
  • Miscarriage
  • Birth defects in your child
  • Stillbirth.

Women with eating disorders are at a higher risk of facing complications while trying to conceive and during pregnancy. If you suffer from an eating disorder, it is a good idea to get treated for it before you try to conceive a child.

As you can see, ensuring that you receive sufficient nutrition is of paramount importance when you are pregnant. However, this also does not mean that you should eat mindlessly with the sole intention of gaining weight. Weight gain during pregnancy is a natural phenomenon—you don’t need to induce it by eating junk. In fact, during pregnancy your goal should be to eat healthy.

Follow a pregnancy nutritional plan that has been recommended by your doctor. You can even consult a dietician to get a custom-made pregnancy diet plan that will ensure that you and your baby receive the optimum amount of nutrition. Avoid going on crash diets while you are pregnant. You will have ample time after your baby is born to get back into shape.

Some of the important pregnancy nutrients that should be included in your diet when you are pregnant include:

  • Protein
  • Carbohydrates
  • Calcium
  • Iron
  • Vitamin A
  • Vitamin B6
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin D
  • Folic Acid
  • Fat

Your nutritional requirements also vary depending on which trimester you’re in and this is why it is so important to have a pre-planned pregnancy diet chart that maps your various nutritional requirements from week to week.
