Diet Plan for Diabetics

What is the best diet for diabetes patient?
(July 26, 2010)

Diabetes is a common condition in which the body is unable to produce enough insulin, or body cells do not respond properly to the insulin that is produced by the body. Exercise and proper diet are paramount to control and maintain diabetes. First and foremost, the aim of any diet for diabetes patients is to reduce the intake of simple sugars such as starches and carbohydrates. As a rule, fresh foods are always better than canned or frozen foods. If you chose to eat a healthy diet to control diabetes, you have already started to manage it.

A good diet will also help you watch your weight.

Vegetables are filled with nutrients, low in calories, and full of fiber. Loading your plate with vegetables means you are leaving out simple carbohydrates and saturated fats which raise blood sugar. Avoid starchy vegetables such as potatoes, corn and peas which are high in calories.
Fruits are brimming with the nutrients your body needs. Compared to any other food, they are low in fats, low in calories and high in fiber. The best part about fruits is that they contain natural antioxidants which help protect your nerves, eyes, and heart.

Beans are the best source of dietary fiber. Including them in your diet helps maintain your blood sugar levels from spiking after a meal.
For breakfast, eat cereals with your choice of fruit. A high fiber diet is the best way to start your day. You tend to eat less during the day if you include fiber in your morning breakfast.

Fish is a good source of rich protein and a great substitute for high fat meat. Nuts are also loaded with good fats that help fight heart disease. They are a rich source of Vitamin E, dietary fiber, magnesium, and antioxidants that help regulate your blood sugar. Remember not to eat too much, as they are very high in calories. Yoghurt is an excellent source of protein and calcium. Including yoghurt in your daily diet will help you lose weight and reduce the risk of becoming insulin resistant.

Eat several small meals through the day rather than a few heavy meals. This helps your body regulate blood sugar levels and helps you lose weight. It is important to follow a regular meal schedule, though. Whatever your weight is, if you start exercising and eating healthy, you are sure to avoid the long term complications that accompany diabetes.
