Benefits of Drinking Water

How much water should an adult drink every day? Is it true that you should drink lots of water?
(July 22, 2010)

From a very young age, we are taught to drink plenty of water. It is therefore only natural to try to determine the exact amount of water that you need to drink in order to remain healthy. The amount of water you require will depend on the climate, your activity levels, your weight, your age, and other related factors. An individual with average activity levels would require a minimum of 8 cups or 1.9 liters of water.
In general, women require less water and so about 2.2 liters would suffice while men require more water and so they would need about 3 liters a day. This would also include juices, milk shakes, and other beverages as they contribute a certain amount of fluids to your daily fluid intake.

There is a lot of dissension as to what the “perfect amount” of water is, and so you should make sure that you try to drink small amounts of water throughout the day in order to keep your body fluids at an optimum level. Most people lose approximately 1.5 liters of water though urination every day and about 1 more liter through various bodily functions and processes such as sweating, breathing, and bowel movements. You can also opt for fresh vegetable and fruit juices as this will help to increase your fluid intake. Since juices are rather tasty, you will find it easier to drink larger amounts of fluids. Furthermore, these juices contain several nutrients and so they also help to replenish your body and keep you healthy. If you are unsure as to whether your fluid intake is adequate, you can check the color of your urine throughout the day for a few days as this will help to determine the amount of fluids you need on a daily basis. If the color of your urine is dark in color, it would mean that you require more water and if it is completely colorless, it would probably mean that you may need to reduce your consumption of water. Urine should always be a light golden yellow color and this signifies that you are drinking enough water every day.

Any imbalance in your fluid intake can have disastrous results. If you drink too much water, you can suffer from water poisoning which in turn can cause dizziness and nausea. Water poisoning can even be fatal. On the other hand, if you do not receive an adequate amount of fluids during the day, you can become dehydrated and this will result in unnecessary and intense strain and stress on your organs. Dehydration is not an uncommon problem and it has been known to be fatal.
