Low Carbohydrate Diet
The Ketogenic diet is low in carbohydrate, high in fat with moderate proteins. The state of starvation is imitated, thereby resulting in the burning of fat, and not carbohydrate. It is used in treating conditions, such as epilepsy. Glucose is the by product of various metabolic reactions. Restriction of carbohydrates in the diet results in the breakdown of fat into ketone bodies and fatty acids.
Entry of ketone bodies in the brain replaces glucose. Increased production of ketone bodies results in ketosis. This has an anticonvulsant effect. The ratio of fat to a mixture of carbohydrate and protein is 4:1.
Bread, pasta, starchy vegetables, sugar, grains and starchy fruits are avoided. The ketogenic diet is recommended for individuals with glucose transporter 1 deficiency syndrome and pyruvate dehydrogenase (E1) deficiency. Certain side effects of a ketogenic diet are improper weight gain, constipation, and hypoglycaemia and low grade acidosis. About 30 per cent increase in cholesterol is seen. Correlation with kidney stones is also seen in some cases. Medications for seizures with a ketogenic diet seem helpful. The alertness of children are enhanced, irrespective of the seizure regulation. Several vitamins are not provided by the diet, and hence calls for supplements.
