Taking the first step towards a new diet is not easy, especially for a person who has never been on any kind of weight loss program before. Most people are becoming aware of the health risks that are associated with obesity and leading a sedentary lifestyle and are willing to make changes, but suffer from lack of direction. Nowadays, you can see many people, who are not overweight but still exercise regularly and eat carefully. This is because staying fit makes it easier for a person to prevent and treat emotional and physical problems. Given below, are a few easy tips that can help you start your diet and remain successful:
- Get professional advice, before you get started on your diet.
It is advisable to undergo a medical check up to rule out possibilities of any health conditions. A doctor can also guide you about your ideal weight and a weight loss program that will suit your needs.
- After you consult your doctor, set a realistic target for losing weight. Setting a goal that is too high could lead to serious health problems, if achieved. If you cannot achieve your target, it is only natural for you to get disappointed and lose motivation.
- Make sure that you follow a plan, where you lose about 2 pounds a week, not more. Crash diets should be strictly avoided, as they can lower your metabolism, making it more difficult for you to lose weight.
- Clean out your cupboards and the fridge, by getting rid of all unhealthy and fattening food items. Replace sweets like cakes and chocolates with fresh fruit. Full cream dairy products can be replaced with the low fat variety. Replace fried and salty snacks with almonds, air-popped popcorn and soy products. Breads and pastas that you use should also be made of wholegrain. Vegetables should make up the main part of people’s diets, especially those who are trying to lose weight.
- Don’t skip any of your meals, but reduce the amount you each at each meal. Studies indicate that it is much easier to lose weight, if you eat 5 or 6 small meals, instead of 3 large ones.
- Make sure that you drink at least 8 to 10 glasses of water every day, as it helps in digestion as well as keeps you full longer. Avoid sodas or drinks that are high in sugar.
While dieting is important to lose weight, it is very important to exercise everyday too. Make it a point to work out for about 45 minutes, for at least 5 days a week.
