While a lot of the medical focus is on the risks posed by a person being overweight or obese, a number of people forget that the other end of the spectrum, being underweight, is also dangerous. There are a number of factors that will play a significant role in being underweight such as hereditary, heightened metabolism rates, or even the presence of a medical condition such as hyperthyroidism, cancer, tuberculosis and diabetes to name but a few. There are also situational conditions that will impact and influence a person’s weight such as poverty and famine while certain eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa also play a role. The more common symptoms that accompany being underweight include a noticeable loss of body weight, fatigue, poor physical stamina and a rather low resistance to infection.
Being underweight is a rather easy problem to correct but requires the cooperation of the affected individual to incorporate the right eating habits into his or her lifestyle.
Usually, this will only be a hurdle in the case of the patient suffering from anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa. One of the easiest ways to put on weight will be to regularly consume a glass of hot milk with a spoon of honey mixed in. Another very useful home remedy is to take about 3 to 4 dry figs and immerse them in some water over the course of the night and have them twice a day to see a significant increase in your body weight. Combining equal amounts of pomegranate seed powder with powder made from Indian ginseng root and consuming the mixture twice a day for a period of about a month with a glass of water or milk will help a person gain weight. The regular consumption of a banana milkshake is known to expedite weight gain in underweight individuals while eating a mango after just having consumed a glass of milk is known to be very effective as well. Unlike when dealing with individuals that are overweight, patients that are underweight have no restrictions placed on the food they eat simply because they are high in fat content. In fact, underweight individuals will be encouraged to consume higher quantities of foods that are known to have a high fat content. As a result, foods like figs, butter, wheat, flour and figs should all make up a healthy portion of the individuals daily diet. However, they should not consume foods that have significant amounts of unhealthy oils and fats.
