Cancer Patients Diet

What are some of the best diet for cancer patients?
(July 15, 2010)

In spite of all the many years of research that have gone into identifying a cure for cancer, the medical fraternity today are not much closer to curing the condition than they were when they started. As a result, the cure for cancer is widely regarded to be a holy grail for any scientist or medical researcher. The diet will always play a very important role in the lifestyle an individual leads and this is even more so in times when the individual is unwell. Because a patient suffering with cancer has to undergo a number of medical tests, surgeries and radiation, there is a pressing need for the body to receive the adequate supply of nutrients and protein. It can be much harder than normal to get a cancer patient to eat the right kinds of food, or maybe even to eat at all because of the side effects that they experience such as nausea and vomiting. These side effects are most apparent during the initial stages of their treatment.

It also helps to keep in mind that research shows that the onset of cancer causes substantial metabolic and physiological changes that happen to increase the requirement of protein, fats, minerals, carbohydrates, and vitamins. Some of the more common side effects of cancer treatment include a loss of appetite, diarrhea, lactose intolerance, and constipation as well as a sore throat or mouth. However, despite the fact that these side effects may interfere with proper nutrition, an appropriate diet for cancer patients is a must. The benefits of a balanced diet for cancer patients include the buildup of strength and strengthening the immune system so that the individual can withstand the side effects of the cancer treatment as well as preserve their lean body mass.

During the treatment of cancer, the body will tend to use up more calories to generate energy than under normal conditions. As a result, consumption of a high energy diet that contains significant amounts of protein will help replenish energy and protein losses that are commonplace during the treatment of cancer. The best kinds of diets for cancer patients include salads made from raw fruits and vegetables as they provide the body with cancer fighting agents that include phytochemicals, cumines, phenols, and indols. Soy products are known to be very rich in protein content and, as a result, should make up the majority of any meal being consumed. The antioxidant properties of garlic and green tea are also known to be very effective when it comes to the body’s ability to eliminate cancerous cells.
