Crash diets are diets that are extremely restricted and generally cause severe nutritional deficiencies. Although the main aim of crash diet plans is to reduce calorie intake, they also end up providing little nutrition. These fad diets have become the rage as people attempt to take on the battle of the bulge through extreme methods. The rise in obesity in recent years can be attributed mainly to the increase in junk food consumption. Junk food and fast food has become a part of our regular diet and since these foods are extremely fatty, the result is weight gain.
Fatty snacks, pastries, and creamy treats are another cause of obesity and while there are many who are turning to healthier snacks like fresh fruits, there are those who literally wish to have their cake and eat it!
Effects of Crash Diets: There is no simple answer to the question ‘do crash diets actually work?’ as the answer would depend on your definition of the word ‘work’. If by ‘work’ you mean, do they help you lose weight, then the answer would be ‘yes, crash diets actually work’. These fad diets allow you to eat only the most meager portions of calorie-low food and so if an individual sticks to this type of a diet they would probably lose weight.
However, having said that, it is important to keep in mind that an individual following crash diet plans would also suffer from various other side effects of this diet. The person’s skin would become dry and sallow and their hair would also become dry and coarse. This would be caused by the deficiency of vitamins and healthy fatty acids required for beautiful skin and hair. The person would also be susceptible to illness as their body’s immune system would be weakened. A very restrictive diet places a lot of pressure on a person’s organs and this can result in permanent damage to the organs which in turn can shorten the individual’s lifespan. A person’s mental faculties would also be affected by the deprivation of food and so their concentration powers as well as their power of retention would be considerably reduced.
Most studies have shown that crash diets are not really an option as the individual is most likely to go back to their bad eating habits with even more vigor once they realize that they cannot stick to the crash diet plan. Even worse, this may cause serious eating problems like binge eating and bulimia. For lasting weight loss, no crash diet can replace a healthy diet plan.
