Importance of Protein

Is Eating Too Much Protein Bad For You? I always felt protein is good, but read somewhere that its harmful in excess
(May 26, 2010)

Eating any nutrient in excess is not a healthy idea. Even if a person is on a diet of some sort, excessive protein intake is not the best way to go. The basic science behind consumption of protein is that it provides the body with muscle mass. In case someone is on the kind of diet where they need to lose weight and gain muscle, it is a great thing to cut down on carbohydrate intake and increase protein intake instead. The simple reason for this is that carbohydrates provide bulk and energy.

They are also responsible for weight gain, as carbohydrates are sugar rich too. However, protein is required by the body in limited quantities. An excess of protein can lead to acidic build up within the body, which can cause other related damage. Such acidic build ups can be responsible for things like development of arthritis in the long run. None of the ill effects of excessive protein intake will be felt in the beginning. If anything, the person will feel energetic and will also be able to develop solid musculature. These negatives come about much later, and by the time they do, nothing much can be done about them anyway. Protein is also a natural inhibitor of calcium absorption in the human body.

The other thing about protein is that there are two types. One is animal protein and one is plant protein. Animal protein is tougher to digest than plant protein and is also more concentrated in nature. This will lead to greater deposits of calcium in the joints, which is ultimately what leads to problems such as arthritis and even gout. Naturally, it is impossible to flush this excessive and mostly useless calcium from the body. As much as possible, the organs responsible for absorption and excretion of protein such as the kidney and liver, do their best to flush excessive protein from the body via urine. Consumption of excessive amounts of protein also exerts these organs more and this can weaken them before time as well. Plant protein on the other hand, is chemically composed in such a way that it is easier to break down and digest. It is always a better option to stick to plant proteins such as beans and avoid meat. Apart from meat, it is avoidable to take protein supplements, as these are mostly created using a combination of chemicals and are totally artificial in nature.
