What are the health benefits of coconut water? How can we include it in our diet?
(May 12, 2010)

Coconut water is got from young coconuts. This should not be mixed up with coconut milk which is extracted after grinding the coconut paste. The coconut water tends to be slightly cloudy but sweet and contains a delicate taste. Coconut water is found to be very similar in its composition to the human blood plasma that was used during the World War II. At times it was even used in the blood transfusions.

Coconut water is very beneficial in helping people to rehydrate. Patients who are recovering from various illnesses or surgery are often advised to drink coconut water to help in replenishing in lost salts. Athletes and people involved in strenuous workouts are also recommended to drink plenty of coconut water along with any other fluid intake. This is so largely because coconut water is found to contain most of the beneficial ingredients that one would get even in a sports drink. It contains electrolytes, sugars, sodium and potassium and plenty of water. Coconut water contains these ingredients naturally unlike various sports drinks which try to emulate these products. Coconut water contains no additives or colorings or flavorings unlike most aerated or sports drinks.

Coconut water has been found to cause less nausea, no stomach upset, and can be consumed in large quantities with out having any side effects. it is a fresh and refreshing drink that can be consumed by people of all ages, from toddlers to the older people. Some people maintain consumption of Coconut water helps in strengthening a person’s immune system. It can help those who are suffering from kidney problems or even those who are suffering from urinary tract infections. People who are trying to lose weight are advised to drink plenty of coconut water as it leads to an increased metabolism thereby helping them to lose weight. Studies are still underway to confirm if these theories are actually factual or not. At times however coconut water is not entirely sufficient in replacing other drinks. This is because it may not contain the required amount of sodium needed to replenish the lost fluids and salts that can be found in electoral etc. In places like India, Hawaii or Malaysia, fresh coconut water can be obtained anywhere. In other countries the coconut water found tends to be packaged or tinned. Overall assessment is that coconut water is beneficial for a person and can be drunk in large quantities.
