Caffeine is classifies as a stimulant. Consuming too much anything is not good and consuming excess of caffeine cam result in an accelerated heart rate. It can even cause excessive anxiety, excessive urination and a stomach upset. A moderate or an average cup of coffee is considered to be about 250 mg. For those persons who consume greater than this quantity in a day, they may need to start reducing their coffee intake.
Caffeine has been found to be mildly addictive. Some of the withdrawal symptoms that people face when they try to quit or reduce their coffee intake are fatigue and headaches. Consumption of excessive caffeine can also be a barrier in the absorption of calcium and is also known to be a deterrent in some other medicines being absorbed by the human body. It is vital that women who are pregnant should limit or stop their caffeine intake. The preferable limit for women who are pregnant is about a coffee a day. Too much caffeine for a pregnant woman can cause harm to the fetus.
Caffeine is found in products like tea, coffee, cocoa and chocolate. Some manufacturers even add it to their soft drinks, gum, candies, and energy drinks. It is added for the purpose of becoming an energy booster or as a stimulant. Some of the pain relievers, cold medicines, and appetite suppressants have caffeine added to them. To know how much caffeine there is on packaged ingredients you can read the labels of those items. So the end result is that a cup or so coffee or an occasional chocolate is safe for people in general. These products which contain caffeine also contain other healthy nutrients and antioxidants which are required for people. Some theories and studies have shown that moderate coffee drinking has a positive effect on people’s health. The caffeine in the coffee is found to reduce the risk of developing dementia. A study was done on people suffering from Parkinson’s disease when caffeine was added to a sample group’s diet they showed positive results. Thus those who have a small intake of caffeine regularly are less likely to suffer from this debilitating disease. Caffeine intake has even been found to enhance the physical performance in athletes. Similarly a dose of caffeine also helps in mental stimulation. Thus the bottom line is caffeine in moderation may actually prove to be beneficial to the human body.
