Diets for Cancer

Does changing your diet help in fighting cancer?
(May 11, 2010)

Cancer belongs to that class or category of disease whose primary symptom is rampant and uncontrolled cell growth in various parts of the body. There are various types of cancer known today having their own set of symptoms. Cancer typically causes irreparable damage to the body by damaging the cells that then tend to forms lumps or tissue masses also known as tumors. These tumors then tend to interfere with the circulatory, nervous and digestive systems.

Cancer unlike most other health issues is not directly liked to ones diet and lifestyle. Regular exercise with a minimal or no intake of alcohol and smoking is ideal to prevent or combat cancer.

Individuals suffering from cancer should go on a plant based diet which includes foods like fruits, vegetables, beans, grains and nuts. It’s ideal to consume these foods in their natural forms that is without excessive cooking, peeling or processing so as to experience the true benefits of the nutrients present in them. Plant based foods are also known to be high in fiber which plays an important role in keeping the digestive system healthy and clean.

The consumption of meat should be reduced drastically as meat does not tend to have the necessary nutrients required to protect an individual against cancer. Instead most meats are high in fat content which increases the risk of cancer. If meat has to be consumed then it is safer to opt for lean meats such as turkey, chicken or fish. Processed meats like salami, hot dogs, bacon etc should be thoroughly avoided. Fats are not entirely harmful provided they are chosen wisely. Trans fats or saturated fats commonly found in red meat, eggs etc are more dangerous than unsaturated fats found in tuna, nuts, olive oil etc which are beneficial in combating cancer. Processed and fast foods like fries, chips, doughnuts etc are high in trans fast and have to be consumed judiciously .some of the strongest cancer fighting foods  are those with high amounts of anti oxidants such as fruits and vegetables. An ideal diet for cancer should also include large amounts of water as it helps to flush out the toxins from one’s body and aid transportation of nutrients to the different body organs. The way food is prepared also helps in fighting cancer. Vegetables should ideally be steamed with minimal water while cooking so as to retain their vital nutrients and goodness.
