Advice on Brat Diet for Stomach

The BRAT diet is used in case of individuals with dyspepsia, gastroenteritis and diarrhoea. Foods rich in fibre are not permitted, as flatulence worsens a gastro intestinal upset. Foods that are easily digestible and bland form the Brat diet. It is an acronym for Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast, which comprise the diet. There are two variations or extensions of the same as BRATT or BRATY diet. Toast and yoghurt forms the extensions. These foods are helpful for any kind of gastro intestinal illnesses. Protein supplements or foods rich in protein, such as tofu are allowed.

Rice and bananas have a positive effect on a poor stomach. The mucosa of the intestine is safeguarded by amylase resistant starch in rice. Research is underway regarding the safety of the BRAT diet. Deficiencies of fat, fibre, carbohydrate, energy and protein are seen to occur. Lack of other micronutrients is also seen. Choosing any kind of a restrictive diet in conditions, such as diarrhoea might result in severe complications.

The diet fails to talk about salt replenishment. Diarrhoea results in loss of water and other electrolytes, thereby resulting in deficiency of sodium and potassium. Confusion, fatigue and coma are common. At times, diarrhoea is life threatening. The Brat diet is not recommended for children. Banana and rice, considered to be binders are included in their diet.
