Bland Diet for Stomach Problems

A bland diet is low in its spice content. It is generally prescribed for individuals suffering from bowel problems, nausea, flatulence, vomiting and ulcer. These foods are low in fibre and are soft in texture. Mashed potatoes, saltine crackers, cream of wheat, white bread, pasta, noodles, macaroni, bun and white rice are the foods recommended. Citrus fruits, berries, pineapple, orange, grapefruits and lemon are not permitted.

Bland diets help in preventing the increased acid secretion and protect the stomach from upset or any kind of complications. Caffeinated beverages are not preferred. Frequent and small meals are preferred. Pepper, spices and chillies are completely abstained from. Spices and flavours are not allowed, especially in cheese. Fried and fatty foods are not allowed. A bland diet has a poor palatability. Irritants are not allowed.

Though the nutrient requirement is met by following a bland diet, individual preferences or dislikes might contribute to deficiencies. Proper chewing or mastication is helpful. Skimmed milk and low fat dairy products are allowed. Custard, lean meat, jam, jelly, corn starch puddings, sponge cake and plain cakes form the desserts. Lunch meat, potato chips, hamburgers, pastries, hot dogs, peppermint, mustard, concentrated sweets, nuts, pickles and chocolates are avoided.
