Weight Gain during Stress

Stress can be one of the reasons for weight gain in individuals. Although the individual is eating food right and regularly doing exercise, He or she may be gaining weight. This occurs due to excessive stress that can produce a hormone called cortisol that can slow down the metabolism causing weight gain. When our body experience stress for longer period of time it gets a signal that we are in danger. The body responds to this signal by bringing about metabolic changes. Person under stress may crave for fatty, salty or sugary foods which is unhealthy and can lead to weight gain. It can alter the blood sugar levels thus causing mood swings and fatigue. Excessive can lead to deposition of fat in the abdomen thus leading health problems.

People under stress may not be able to concentrate while eating leading to overeating. They may not have time to prepare food at home and hence may prefer fast foods from outside. They may not be interested in exercise.

Eat right foods in proper amounts and frequently. Healthy snacks are essential between the meals. Prefer protein rich snacks that can make a person feel satisfied. Increase the physical activity. Simple exercises like walking, cycling or swimming are beneficial. Give some time for yourself. Take a break in between the work for recreational activities like listening to music, painting, reading, watching television, playing video games for a massage or take a walk in beach. Certain relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation can be useful.
