Information on Mediterranean Diet

The Mediterranean diet comprises of vegetables, fruits, bread, cereals, beans, nuts, seeds and potatoes in high quantities. The other principles off the diet are low to moderate amounts of dairy products. Egg is considered four times a week and wine is permitted in low amounts. Fish and poultry are preferred in moderate amounts, whereas red meat is restricted. The Mediterranean diet fails to follow the recommendations by the American heart association to an exact manner.

A high percentage of calories from fat is seen, though fifty per cent of them are achieved from monounsaturated fats.

The choice of fat plays a vital role, rather than the quantity used. Saturated and hydrogenated fats are completely abstained from. Pecans, almonds, hazelnuts and walnuts are rich sources of omega 3 fatty acids. The latter has an anti inflammatory effect, thereby helping in stabilizing the blood lining.

Increasing risk of obesity is one of the main drawbacks of the Mediterranean diet. The diet proves heart friendly. The pyramid is framed in a daily, weekly and monthly manner. The pyramid also lays emphasis on exercise, unlike other pyramids. Healthy and delicious foods promoting weight loss is the main concept of this diet. Fish is recommended on a regular basis and olive oil helps with omega 3 fatty acids.
