Information on Low Cholesterol Diet
A low cholesterol diet comprises of foods that are poor in cholesterol or those that help in lowering the cholesterol levels. This is generally prescribed, in individuals with high blood cholesterol. It is also recommended for people above 40 years with normal cholesterol levels. Opting for vegetarian foods is one of the easiest methods. Vegetables and fruits with whole grains and legumes are helpful.
A low fat diet also aids in lowering the cholesterol levels. Avoid red meat, margarine, butter, hydrogenated fats, clarified butter and others that have invisible fat hidden in them. Low fat dairy products with skimmed milk are also effective. Turkey, fish and deskinned chicken are better substitutes for red meat. Unsalted and unbuttered seeds and nuts, such as pistachios and cashew nuts are preferred in a restricted manner. Vegetable based sauces are preferred, rather than sauces based on dairy products. Pastries, pizzas, chips, cakes and other processed foods are better avoided.
Foods high in fibre, such as oats, dried peas and beans, vegetables and fruits are recommended. Cooking methods help in lowering cholesterol levels, such as pressure cooking, boiling, microwave and baking proves beneficial. The benefits of a low cholesterol diet include decreased risks of heart diseases, atherosclerosis, heart attacks and obesity. It also assures better health, free of any diseases.
