Binge Eating Disorder

Eating disorders have become very common in today’s world; there are some people who almost starve themselves, when they suffer from eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia nervosa. However, there is one eating disorder known as Binge Eating Disorder, which evokes the opposite effect in a person.

What is binge eating disorder?

Binge eating disorder can be described as a very serious eating problem in which a person ends up consuming an unusually large amount of food, during the day. Some of the health experts refer to binge eating disorder as compulsive overeating. On its own, overeating is not every uncommon once is a while, as almost everyone tends to indulge in an extra helping or two on certain occasions.


However, when a person suffers from binge eating disorder, this habit of overeating becomes a daily occurrence, sometimes shrouded with secrecy. Most people who have binge eating disorder are aware that they have a problem. They are usually embarrassed about their eating problem and try to change their habits. However, just like with any other disorder, binge eating disorders create a compulsion, which cannot be overcome so easily. Therefore, when a person realizes that he or she may be suffering from this problem, it is best to seek professional help to undergo the right treatment for binge eating disorder.

Binge eating disorder causes

The exact cause of a binge eating disorder is still not clear, but since this is more of a metal illness, medical health experts believe that some of some of the possible causes of this condition include:

• Biological and genetic factors
• Emotional and psychological problems like mood swings and low self esteem
• Environmental conditions, which put a lot of pressure on an individual to be thin, thereby triggering off the opposite effect

Binge eating disorder symptoms

Binge eating disorder tends to trigger off various unfavorable signs and symptoms in people. Some of the common symptoms of binge eating disorders include:

• Eating an unusually large amount of food
• Continuing to eat, even after being full
• Trying to go on a diet frequently, without any success
• Feeling guilty after eating
• Consuming food at a very fast pace
• Depression
• Having most meals alone out of preference
• Anxiety
• Obesity or rapid weight gain

Binge eating disorder treatment

The treatment of binge eating disorder is aimed at reducing and controlling binge attacks, by increasing emotional wellbeing. Hence, several motions and psychological factors need to be addressed in order to treat binge disorder successfully. There are four main approaches that can be used in order to do that, which include:

• Psychotherapy
• Medication
• Behavioral programs on weight loss
• Self help strategies

The treatment for binge eating disorder is subjective and could have varying results. Since there is no definite way to stop binge eating disorder, a combination of all the options may work best.

Unfortunately, not all people take binge eating disorders seriously. However, if left untreated, this disorder could lead to several health problems, some of which could be life threatening. Therefore, it is absolutely essential for all people to consult a health care provider for assistance on how to stop binge eating disorder, as early as possible.

Causes and Treatment for Binge Eating

Binge eating disorder is a type of eating disorder which affects millions of people over the world. People suffering from this disorder eat a large amount of food in a very short period of time. They get a felling of comfort when they binge and generally have feeling a loss of control over their eating. This disorder is different from bulimia nervosa or binge-purge syndrome because people suffering form this disorder does not purge or abuse any laxatives after a binge episode. Because of this striking difference between the two disorders many a times it becomes difficult to identify if you are suffering form this disorder or not. A solution for this could be careful watch over the behavior of the person as most of the people with binge eating disorder would have frequent eating episodes which involve large amounts of food which is considered abnormally large for others. They have frequent feeling where they are not able to control how much they eat. They eat more rapidly then usual until they are uncomfortably full, they eat large amounts of food even if they are not mentally hungry, they often feel embarrassed about the quantity of food they eat so they often eat food alone, and they would have a feeling of disgust, guilt and depression after overeating. Most of the people with binge eating disorders are obese but normal weight people can also suffer from this disorder. The complications of binge eating disorder are all related to obesity like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. With correct guidance and diet this disorder can be treated effectively.
