Information on Eating Disorder
Eating disorders are serious psychological conditions which should not be ignored as they can cause potential health problems in the long run. There are different types of eating disorders like anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder. All of these have different characteristics and associated health problems. The causes for any eating disorder are not yet clear however psychological, genetic, family and social factors play an important role in its initiation.
Anorexia nervosa – this is a condition when a person refuses to maintain his/her ideal body weight although he/she is more than 15% below her ideal body weight. A person with this disorder refuses to eat enough food and thinks that he is already fat and will gain more weight if he/she eats more food.
Bulimia nervosa – this condition is characterized by frequent episodes of binging and purging. A person suffering from this condition wants to lose weight and remain thin but at the same time eat. So immediately after eating they self induce vomiting by putting their finger in their mouth or use excessive laxative.
Other eating disorder which does not fall under the category of anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa includes binge eating disorder which involves binging large amounts of food in a short period of time. However unlike bulimia purging after binging is not seen.
