Information on Carbohydrates
+-Carbs is a short abbreviation often used for carbohydrates by many people as a short form or just as a trend. Carbohydrate is one of the macronutrient found in food which is required by the body for energy. Body's vital organs like brain, kidneys and heart often use glucose as a source of energy. Glucose is a breakdown product of carbohydrates up on digestion which is used by every cell of the body for energy. Excess glucose is converted in to glycogen and fatty acids and stored in the body tissues. Carbohydrates or carbs are of two types, 1) simple carbs and 2) complex carbs. Simple carbohydrates are easily digested and found in table sugar, fruits and refined products like white bread. Complex carbohydrates on the other hand are not easily digested in the body and are found in unrefined whole grains, cereals, pulses and vegetables. Complex carbohydrates have much of the vital nutrients and fiber retained which the refining and polishing process removes. So if you have oatmeal cereal for breakfast or brown rice for lunch you would feel full and satisfied for a long period of time but if you eat a sugary cereal or just white rice it will make you feel hungry quickly. A balanced diet should have at least 50-55% of energy coming from carbohydrates out of which most of it should be complex carbohydrates.
