Sugar Carbohydrates

Sugar is a simple form of carbohydrate. It is found in simple sugars, milk, milk products, boiled sweets, honey and syrups. The food is broken into simple sugars, such as glucose, which is then absorbed in the blood stream. Simple sugars contribute to the taste and appearance of a food. It helps in acting as a fuel for any kind of intense workout or physical activity.

The glucose in the blood is utilised with the help of insulin. Muscle tissue breakdown is prevented by carbohydrates. Hence, diets with low carbohydrates prove difficult, as proteins in the muscles are broken down. Certain carbohydrates help in providing food for the gut micro flora. Absorption of calcium from food is enhanced by carbohydrates.
